Weather Update and Revised Course for Cedarock Trail Run

Hi Cedarock Trail Run Athletes,

As of now, the race is a ‘GO’ for Saturday – WOOHOO!  Get your game face on and prepare for a fun, and wet, adventure!

WEATHER UPDATE:  The forecast has not changed much since yesterday at this time.  Most weather outlets are calling for rain showers to start tomorrow (Fri) afternoon/evening and then persist through the day on Saturday.  There may be some thunderstorms overnight on Friday (and into the wee hours of Sat) and then again, with higher probability, on Saturday afternoon and evening.  It looks like there may be some breaks in the showers, and we are not supposed to see any thunderstorms, during the race.

DECISION MAKING PROCESS:  I wish this was a slam dunk decision either way (postpone or hold the event), but it simply is not.  From what I am seeing, we will get a little wet on Saturday, but that’s about it.  I often say ‘You know what happens when it rains?  You get wet.’  And I do believe, from what I am seeing, that is exactly what will happen on Sat.  I will also let you know that we will constantly monitor the weather on race day and that we have contingency plans in place should thunderstorms roll in.  We will communicate those at the pre-race brief.  I will send a short update email tomorrow evening by 8pm and if anything drastic changes in the forecast tomorrow that requires us to postpone, I will let you know at that time.  I apologize to push this out one more day but no one wants to show up on Saturday just to turn around and go home.  Thank you for your understanding.

Course Conditions and Course Alterations:  The park received 3 inches of rain the other night – that is a lot of rain.  I scouted every inch of the courses this morning and most of the trails were in fine shape – (not mushy or slippery at all), except for two perennially wet sections, which were partially under water.  So, I altered the courses this afternoon, removing those sections from the courses.   Loop A and D are unchanged but Loop B and C needed some adjustments (see map above).  Loop A is 3.38M, Loop B is 2.87M, Loop C is 3.60M, and Loop D is 3.28M.  The 5K is 3.38 miles, the 10K is 6.25 miles, and the Half Marathon is 13.13 miles.  Also, the mudholes that are always present on the horse trails are just more wet and muddy now, but still passable on the edges.  What about the rain showers we get on Fri and Sat?  Well, there will be some slick spots, for sure – so watch your footing – but the vast majority of the courses should be fairly hard-packed and easily runnable.  I will provide an update on the trail conditions at the pre-race brief.

Parking Update:  We changed our parking plan.  We will fill the campground parking areas first (adjacent to the staging area) and then the big gravel lots after that.  FYI – I was mistaken in the pre-race email, I thought both gravel lots were being paved, but it is only the one near the playground.  Anyway, just follow the ‘Race Parking’ signs when you enter the park and look for the staff/volunteers to assist with parking.

Address for Cedarock Park:  4242 R. Dean Coleman Road, Burlington, NC 27215

Arrival:
Please arrive early to help alleviate backups.  It takes time to park, check-in, use the bathroom, warm up, and attend the pre-race brief.  We recommend arriving by 7am (at the latest).

Check-in/Packet Pick-Up:   Check-in/packet pick-up will take place at the pavilion near the Cedarock Park Visitor Center from 6:30am-7:45am.  At check-in you will receive your bib number (with timing chip for solo racers), race baton (with timing chip for relay teams ONLY – one/team), and your race t-shirt.  Below is your race check-in QR code.  If you can show this to the check-in volunteers, it will speed up the check-in process.  If you do not have it, no worries – we can look you up.
