Why I Love Racing

As we prepare to kick-off our 2022 race season in just over a month, I wanted to share my thoughts on why I race, because, I’m not just a race director, I’m a racer as well.

Why I Love Racing:

‘The race is about to begin.  As I stand there listening to the pre-race brief, the anticipation is palpable.  I’m conflicted – excited but nervous, confident but doubtful.  I embrace the pre-race jitters – I know it’s part of the race experience.  The race starts.  That first half mile is unnerving.  The pre-race adrenaline has subsided as I set my pace and get into my groove.  I’m working hard and the miles tick away almost effortlessly.  I’m focused and in the zone.  I feel great.  When I get just past the half-way mark, I can feel my body shifting.  The miles seem longer, it’s getting harder, and I’m hurting.  Self-doubt sets in and I start to feel unsure of my capability to finish strong.  Why do I do this to myself?  As these thoughts swirl around my mind, I keep moving forward, pushing through the pain.  I’m running on empty, then I see the ‘1/2 Mile To Go’ sign and I get a rush of adrenaline.  I push the pain aside, dig deep, and pick up the pace.  As I approach the finish line, I feel a sense of relief and joy.  I cross the finish line, grab a water, sit in the grass, and cool off.   As I cheer on others crossing the finish line, I’m filled with a sense of accomplishment.  I did it.  I left it all out there, overcame pain and self-doubt, and did my best.  I feel awesome, confident that I can do hard things and succeed.  I will not give up and I will persevere in the face of adversity – this experience proves it.’

As a racer, it is extremely rewarding to do my best and achieve and as a race director, it is equally satisfying to facilitate this accomplishment in others.  Challenging ourselves and stepping out of our comfort zones helps us grow and makes us better.  It is powerful and it’s why I love racing.

Come race with us and experience the power of personal accomplishment.

See you on the trails.
